Artichokes are a sure way to add glitz to a dinner table. They're an easy eye-catcher for those who aren't familiar with it. And to those who taste them for the first time, it's a beautiful experience.

Artichokes surprisingly have a recognizable flavor. The taste is somewhat reminiscent of the asparagus- a mild sweetness with an exciting hint of nuttiness. In some way, you may even be reminded of baked potatoes when you eat them.

And how are artichokes eaten? Well, not like any other vegetable, if you must know. The plant grows like a bud, with large leaves forming a bulb shape, but in a way that can be pulled off. These leaves are plucked and scrapped through the teeth so that you can enjoy the delicious fleshy portion. And you can also have it with a side of dipping sauce-pluck, dip in melted butter, tug through your teeth and enjoy!

As delicious and attractive as artichokes are, it's also exciting to know they're pretty easy to cook. One of the quickest ways is by steaming in the microwave. This method is a great way to whip up a quick vegetable snack when you're in a jam. And here's how to do it;

How to Cook Artichoke in the Microwave

Prepare the Artichokes

Start by rinsing the artichokes in running cold water and trimming off the stem. Then, cut an inch off the top of the artichokes and slice off the sharp points of their leaves.

Microwave the Artichoke

Cover the artichokes in plastic wrap and drop them in the microwave. Then, set it to HIGH and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. To check if they're ready, pierce the stems with a knife. And if it quickly goes in, the artichokes are prepared. Remove the plastic wrap carefully so you avoid the steam and serve as preferred.

Extra Tips

  • Note that this direction is for cooking up to five artichokes at once in the microwave. If you're cooking less, three to four minutes on High is enough time in the microwave.
  • The size of the vegetable you're cooking before planning for doneness time. The duration is given here works best for medium ones. Small artichokes should be cooked for about eight to ten minutes.
  • You can also steam the artichokes in a microwave-safe container, preferably ceramic. Place the vegetables in the dish and add about half-inch water. Then, cover and microwave on HIGH for about 10 minutes. When the time is reached, take down the container and let the artichokes sit in it covered for five to six minutes. The steam will cook the leaves even more and allow for softer flesh.
